Field-Based Outreach That Goes to the People Who Need It Most

John's Dignity is a 100% volunteer-run, registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating in the Greater Oklahoma City Metro. We started in February 2026 with 11 sack lunches and a conviction that every person deserves to be seen. Today, we bring meals, clothing, personal care items, and encouragement directly to unhoused neighbors in encampments, railroad-adjacent locations, and wooded areas where standard services simply do not reach. Our mobile homeless assistance model removes the transportation and communication barriers that prevent people from accessing help. We go to them.

Restoring Dignity to Unhoused Individuals

Why Field-Based Outreach Matters in OKC
Bringing Unhoused Support to Greater Oklahoma City, One Block at a Time
Traditional stationary services require unhoused neighbors to find transportation, navigate unfamiliar systems, and sometimes face the fear of confined shelter environments. Many of the people who need help the most never make it through those doors. John's Dignity operates differently. Our mobile homeless assistance approach means we load up and go out, finding neighbors in the spots where they actually are: wooded areas, encampments near railroad tracks, and streets throughout the Greater Oklahoma City Metro. Oklahoma's extreme temperature shifts make this work urgent. A neighbor without a warm jacket or a sleeping bag during a cold snap faces a genuine health risk. By meeting people where they are, we close the gap between available resources and the people who need them most.

Our Story
HOW JOHN'S DIGNITY BEGAN

John's Dignity was founded by Mike and his wife, Kim, after a personal crisis changed the way Kenneth understood homelessness. During a stay at a crisis center, Mike initially felt confined by the facility. But a conversation with an unhoused man who saw that same place as a blessing, a safe space with meals and warmth, shifted everything. Mike realized that what feels like a burden to one person can be a lifeline to another. That moment of perspective became a mission. In February 2026, Mike and Kim packed 11 sack lunches and headed out to the streets of the Greater Oklahoma City Metro. The work has grown from there, fueled entirely by volunteers and donors who believe that small, direct acts of kindness add up to something real.

Clothing and Essentials Distribution
We distribute shirts, pants, shoes, socks, jackets, and seasonal clothing to neighbors who need them. We also provide backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, empty water jugs, toiletries, and personal care products. These are not luxuries; they are the basic tools that help a person stay safe, clean, and functional while living without stable housing in the Greater Oklahoma City Metro.

Transportation Assistance
We offer limited, non-emergency rides to churches, community resources, housing-related appointments, and hospitals for non-emergency needs. For neighbors without reliable transportation, a single missed appointment can set back months of progress. This service helps bridge that gap in the Greater OKC Metro, connecting people to the resources they need to move forward.

Housing and Resource Navigation
Many unhoused neighbors face systemic barriers that go far beyond a lack of shelter. Missing birth certificates, no Social Security information, and no government-issued ID can make employment and housing nearly impossible to access. We help neighbors work through these documentation challenges and connect them with communication tools, including government phones, to help them manage appointments and stay in contact with services across Oklahoma City.

Cold-Weather Support
Oklahoma's winters can be life-threatening for people living outdoors. When temperatures drop, we prioritize distribution of heavy blankets, warm jackets, layered clothing, and sleeping bags to neighbors in encampments and wooded areas throughout the Greater OKC Metro. This is not a seasonal add-on; it is a core part of our field-based outreach programs during the months when outdoor conditions become genuinely dangerous.

Dog Food and Pet Care Support
Many unhoused neighbors traveling through the Greater Oklahoma City Metro are accompanied by dogs. These animals are companions and a source of comfort and security. We provide dog food to neighbors with canine companions, recognizing that caring for a pet is part of caring for the whole person. When a neighbor knows their dog is fed, they are more likely to accept food for themselves as well.

Personal Notes of Encouragement
Tucked inside every sack lunch is a handwritten, non-judgmental message of hope. These notes are a small but meaningful reminder that someone cares. Long-term homelessness can create a deep sense of being forgotten or invisible. A personal note that speaks to a neighbor's worth as a person is a genuine act of connection, and it is one of the things that sets John's Dignity apart from other street outreach services in OKC.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Outreach in OKC
  • How does $0.50 cover the cost of a full meal for an unhoused neighbor in Oklahoma City?

John's Dignity purchases food supplies in bulk, which dramatically reduces the per-item cost of each component. A complete sack lunch includes a sandwich, chips, crackers, a dessert, and a drink. By keeping overhead at nearly zero and relying entirely on volunteers, the organization ensures that almost every donated dollar goes directly into the supplies that reach unhoused neighbors in the Greater OKC Metro. There are no salaries, no storefront costs, and no administrative overhead eating into the budget.
  • Is my donation to John's Dignity tax-deductible?

Yes. John's Dignity is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means monetary and material contributions are tax-deductible under federal law. This status also provides a verified framework for corporate and church partnerships. The organization maintains transparent reporting through regular updates, distribution photos with privacy protections, and receipts so donors stay informed about how their contributions are being used.
  • Why does John's Dignity focus on field-based outreach rather than operating a shelter or food pantry?

Many of the unhoused neighbors who need help most are not able to reach stationary services. They may lack transportation, fear confined shelter environments, or live in wooded areas and encampments that are far from service hubs. John's Dignity was built specifically to reach these individuals by going to them directly. This mobile homeless assistance model removes the travel and access barriers that prevent people from getting help, and it allows the organization to shift routes based on where need is most acute across the Greater Oklahoma City Metro.
  • What kinds of items can I donate to support street outreach in OKC?

John's Dignity distributes a wide range of supplies to unhoused neighbors, including sack lunch components such as sandwich ingredients, chips, crackers, desserts, and drinks, as well as bottled water, clothing including shirts, pants, socks, shoes, and jackets, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, toiletries, personal care products, empty water jugs, and dog food. Seasonal items like heavy blankets and warm layers are especially critical during Oklahoma's colder months when outdoor conditions become dangerous.
  • Does John's Dignity provide emergency medical services or emergency shelter?

No. John's Dignity is a field-based street outreach organization and does not operate a shelter, provide permanent housing, or function as an emergency medical or ambulance service. The organization offers non-emergency transportation assistance, such as limited rides to churches, community resources, housing-related appointments, and hospitals for non-emergency needs, but it does not respond to 911 calls or acute medical crises. All outreach is focused on direct, tangible support in the field.
  • How does John's Dignity help neighbors who are missing identification documents?

A lack of vital records such as a birth certificate, Social Security information, or a government-issued ID creates serious barriers to employment and housing for many unhoused neighbors. John's Dignity provides guidance and navigation support to help individuals work through these documentation challenges. The organization also assists with access to government phones and communication tools, which are essential for managing appointments and staying connected to resources available across the Greater Oklahoma City Metro.
  • Why does John's Dignity provide dog food as part of its outreach services?

Many unhoused neighbors in the Greater OKC Metro travel with dogs, which serve as companions and a source of comfort and security. These neighbors often prioritize their pet's nutrition over their own. By providing dog food during outreach runs, John's Dignity ensures that the human neighbor is also more likely to accept and eat the meal provided. It is a practical recognition that caring for the whole person sometimes means caring for what matters most to them, including their animals.
  • How can churches, civic groups, or local businesses partner with John's Dignity?

John's Dignity actively works with community partners including churches and local organizations throughout the Greater Oklahoma City Metro. Partnerships can take the form of donation drives for clothing, food supplies, or seasonal gear, as well as financial contributions through the organization's 501(c)(3) status, which allows for tax-deductible giving. The organization's bulk-purchasing model means that even modest group donations translate into a meaningful number of meals and supplies for unhoused neighbors in OKC.
